A) WHAT IS CAD? WHERE IT IS USED?

CAD Computer Aided Design has been used by architect engineers and designers since the late 1950s. Originally only the large mainframe computers had the power to support CAD.
As computers got more powerful and less expensive CAD was introduced on personal computers in the early 80s
Since that time nearly everyone who designs uses a computer in some way to support their designs whether for 3D modeling or 2D drafting.
AutoCAD use in a civil, mechanical, electrical, electronics, automobile industry Architects design the built environment including houses apartments schools, hospitals, hotels, factories and large office buildings. CAD lends itself very well to architectural design. Product Designers are the ones who combine artistic form with function. They design consumer products such as cell phones, automobiles, planes and more. Popular CAD here includes 3D and colorful rendering. Mechanical engineers and designers take the design from Product Designers and turn their design into hard products. This is the bolts and nuts part of mechanical design.
MCAD as it is called, is the largest field of CAD. Civil engineers do field surveying and then build models of terrain, then design roads, bridges, rail, dams and more. Plant Designers design refineries, process plants, power plants and similar. Electrical engineers design everything from power transmission lines, to printed circuit boards.
Different CAD is used in each discipline, with the CAD being tailored specifically to the discipline.
The idea in architectural CAD is to design the structure that will accommodate the number of people and the activities for which it is intended. The architect will sketch an idea, get input from the owner, then build some kind of model, either in clay or on the computer. Eventually, the architect produces specifications for the project plus complete set of construction drawings including plan, elevations, detail sheets and more. Architects were among the earliest users of CAD. Product design involves both art and geometric design. All products have form and function.
The form is the way the product looks. The function is what the product does. Product designers use 3D CAD to see what their design will look like before it is made. Eventually a prototype is made and when approved, handed over to the mechanical design process to determine how it will be made and to produce detailed documentation.
Manufacturing CAD or MCAD as it is referred to, is a very large segment. More CAD software licenses are issued for MCAD than any other discipline. MCAD is used by the mechanical engineer or designer to take a design from a Product Designer and to make that product become reality. Parts are modeled and then brought into an assembly. Both parts and assemblies are documented with detailed mechanical drawings.
