India is bordered by Pakistan in the northeast, China, Nepal, and Bhutan in the north and northwest, and Burma to the east. It is surrounded by three different bodies of water: the Arabian Sea in the west, the Bay of Bengal in the east, and the Indian Ocean in the south. The capital of India is New Delhi. The Himalayan Range is in the North and North-eastern region of India. It is India’s largest mountain range. The Thar Desert is the only desert in India and as is the 18th largest desert in the world.
India has a variety of climates. The four different seasons are winter, summer, monsoon, and post-monsoon. Some areas in the North have severe summers with extreme winters, in addition to temperatures reaching to freezing points. In some states, the temperature rises to 113°F and decreases to only 59°F. The average temperature is 78°F – 95°F. The highest temperature recorded in India is 123.08°F. The lowest temperature recorded is -49°F.

The flag is made of three colors: saffron, white, and green. Saffron is a symbol of courage and sacrifice. Next, the white represents honesty, peace, and purity. It emphasizes the importance of maintaining peace in the country. Last of all, green represents faith and chivalry. It is a symbol of prosperity, vibrancy, and life. India’s national anthem was adopted on January 24, 1950. However, it was first sung in 1911.
From 2600 B.C. to 2000 B.C., the Indus Valley civilization flourished. “It is one of the world’s earliest civilizations.” It is said that Aryans entered India in 1500 B.C from the northwest. They introduced Sanskrit and the Vedic religion (a forerunner of Hinduism). In 1498, Vasco de Gama landed in India, and for the next 100 years the Portuguese had monopoly on trade with the subcontinent. The English founded the East India Company and began expanding its influence fighting the Indian rulers and the French, Dutch, and Portuguese traders. Because of the defeat of the French and Mogul armies in 1757, the foundation of the British Empire was laid. India was under British rule for about 340 years, but they gained their independence from the British rule on August 15, 1947. Three years later, on January 26,1950, India became a Republic. Unfortunately, the Indian history includes poverty, corruption, and chaos.
The population in India is about 1,400,000,000. It is the second largest country in population. The origin of Indian language is Sanskrit. Though Hindi is the official language, it is assumed that 880 languages are still in use in India. India is known for its large assortment of dishes and the use of spices and herbs. Most of the popular foods in India include rice, lentils, vegetables, and curry. Rice is served as a side dish or a main course. Curry is a spicy Indian food. Other common food are wheat, barley, bread, chickpeas, cheese, beans, yogurt, coconuts, cashews, and almonds. The food is rich with spices including ginger, coriander, cinnamon, cardamom, turmeric, and dried hot peppers. Indian architecture is as old as the history of the civilization and is the result of socio-economic and geographical conditions. The most well-known architecture in India is the Taj Mahal.
The most dominant religion in India is Hinduism. It is one of the ancient religions in the world.
Many sports are played in India. Field hockey was assumed the national sport of India, but there is no national sport. One of the most popular sports in India is cricket. Cricket is a bat-and-ball game. Soccer (called football in India) is another popular sport in India.
India has many native plants. A few of them include lotus, marigolds, and jasmine. Lotus is a water plant. They are usually pink, white, or a mix of pink and white. Marigolds are grown everywhere in India, and are used for celebrations. Jasmine is the most famous flower in India. It is used for special occasions like weddings. Women adorn their hair with Jasmine flowers because of its sweet fragrance.
Although India is a developing country, its cultures and traditions are considered the richest. However, it is one of the most influential countries in the world, especially in the field of computers and technology.
